I’m a Pittsburgh DJ. Every year I work with many couples who are planning a wedding. I often find couples have a difficult time putting together a wedding day time line.
That’s why I am excited to share this article, The 15 Elements of an Unforgettable Wedding. This is the third and final installment of my short series based on the Brides.com article. By the way, if you haven’t already done so, I highly recommend reading the full article.
This week I want to address element seven. Have a Short Gap Between the Ceremony and Reception.
“While you might be able to get a better price for an early ceremony time and a later reception, it’s best to keep the gap time between your events short enough that guests won’t be left wondering what to do. Of course, there are circumstances when this just isn’t possible (say, if your childhood church or temple only offers one time for the ceremony and your reception venue cannot accommodate an earlier start time). If that’s the case, it’s nice to plan a mini-reception for guests, offering small snacks and drinks, or arrange for a group outing, like a local wine tasting or museum visit.”
As a wedding DJ in Pittsburgh, I arrive at the reception venue hours before the scheduled start of the reception. Often I find guests arriving an hour to an hour and a half early! That’s way to long of a wait. Many times the staff isn’t finished with the room preparation, so the guests are left to wait in the hall or worse, outside of the venue.
A lot of the reasoning for long waits between the ceremony and the reception is addressed in the article, but I wanted to share another reason for the long wait. A reason that I think can be completely avoided.
Often I find couples that want to travel to several locations for pictures between the ceremony and reception. There are many unique locations for wedding photographs in Pittsburgh and couples often want photos at several of these popular sites.
The problem that arises is that taking pictures at several locations takes time and the travel between locations takes even more time! Suddenly your looking at two to three hours to get the photos you want. That’s just too long to keep your guests waiting between your ceremony and reception.
An easy way around this dilemma is to think non-traditionally. Arrange to have your on location photos taken BEFORE your ceremony. This will obviously require you and your fiance to see each other before the wedding. Although it’s non-traditional, many couples have expressed just how much they enjoyed having a romantic and less stressful “first look” to start their wedding day.
By taking your on location photos before your ceremony, you will be able to quickly arrive at your reception. This will keep your guests from having a long wait between your ceremony and reception. You may even arrive in time to enjoy cocktail hour!
